The missions of the Belgian Science Policy Office's Space research and Applications Department are:

  • Management of the Belgian (public) participation in R&D activities carried out by industry and Belgian scientists in space-related matters, primarily within the framework of international organisations to which Belgium belongs (ESA, EUMETSAT, ...), or within the framework of bilateral agreements (e.g. with France on SPOT). The themes covered are: generic technology, launchers, microgravity, space sciences, Earth observation, telecommunication, navigation;
  • Consultation with the other public authorities interested in the area of space and its spillover effects;
  • Educational activities and popularization of space research.
