BELHARMONY - Harmonization of multi-mission high resolution time series: application to BELAIR

Vous êtes ici

Context and objectives

The BELHARMONY project responds to the need of the EO community to have improved consistency in time series generated on the basis of a constellation of medium to high resolution satellite sensors.
The overall objective is to assess and improve the consistency of multi-sensor high resolution time series generated on the basis of the following sensors:  Deimos-1, Sentinel-2, Landsat-8  and PROBA-V.
Specific objectives are:
• To evaluate with vicarious radiometric calibration approaches the consistency at the L1 TOA level for both low and medium to high scene radiance values and to derive, where needed, a set of vicariously determined, temporally averaged gains to be applied to the L1 data for the improvement of the L1 inter-sensor consistency.
• To assess the impact of intrinsic differences in the RSRF of the different sensors on the consistency of both the L2 reflectance and the L3 higher level products (such as NDVI) and to derive SRF adjustment functions to provide L2 and L3 multi-sensor products.
• To (re-)process with a common processing chain time series of Deimos-1, Sentinel-2, Landsat-8  and PROBA-V over a set of selected BELAIR* sites, including agricultural, urban and coastal water sites. In the reprocessing the vicariously derived gains will be applied to the L1 data prior to the atmospheric correction and the SRF adjustment functions will be used to harmonize the L2 and/or L3 products.
• To evaluate/validate over the selected BELAIR sites the impact of the different harmonisation measures on the time series consistency through cross-comparison against existing in-situ reference datasets acquired in the frame of BELAIR and related BELSPO projects.

Project outcome

Expected scientific results

Peer-reviewed scientific publications will be written towards the end of the project. The project will publish the vicariously derived gains and the  SRF adjustment functions allowing the international user community to harmonize their  S2/L8/PROBA-V/DEIMOS-1 data over a site of interest.

Expected products and services

For the BELAIR community the project will provide harmonized time series for the 4 sensors considered in the project over the selected BELAIR sites.

For the international remote sensing community the project will publish

  • sets of vicariously derived gains, both for aquatic and land application;
  • SRF adjustment functions which can be used for the harmonisation of S2/L8/PROBA-V/DEIMOS-1 data over a site of interest.

A methodological approach which can be transferred to other missions

Finally, harmonized time series of fAPAR and fCover from the Belgian potato fields will be made available to non-EO end-users through the watchITgrow platform.

The Belgian remote sensing community will directly benefit from BELHARMONY as the project will make the harmonized multi-mission high resolution time series over the BELAIR sites available to the BELAIR community.

The international user community could benefit from the project as BELHARMONY will publish the vicariously derived gains and the SRF adjustment functions allowing to harmonize their S2/L8/PV/Deimos-1 data over a site of interest. These coefficients could furthermore be made available through the OPERA-SNAP plug-in and/or within the Mission Exploitation Platform which allows for a customized processing of PROBA-V time series and/or through Terrascope Collaborative Ground Segment.

Space agencies and/or data providers are probably interested in the results of the consistency analyses performed in the project.

Non-EO end-users:  harmonized time series of fAPAR and fCover from the Belgian potato fields will be made available to non-EO end-users through the WatchITgrow platform.
