From July 22 to 26, 2019, the European Centre for Geodynamics and Seismology (ECGS) is organising a summer school dedicated to:
- Automated InSAR time series processing for displacement monitoring based on Multidimensional Small Baseline Subset (MSBAS);
- Split Band Interferometry for absolute phase unwrapping or ionospheric phase screen computation.
The summer school will consist in theoretical introduction lectures but most of the time will be dedicated to hands-on training sessions.
During this summer school, successful candidates will learn or review SAR and InSAR basics, single InSAR pair processing up to differential phase layer both for DEM production and deformation mapping. Specific attention will be given to the cutting-edge Split Band method which allows, under certain conditions, to perform absolute phase unwrapping or compute ionospheric phase screen.
With nowadays profusion of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) sensors orbiting the Earth, processing of interferometric SAR (InSAR) time series also allows performing efficient deformation monitoring. But the ever-increasing amount of data requires efficient methodologies and computer optimized strategies. The Multi-dimensional Small Baseline Subset (Samsonov and d’Oreye 2012; 2017) is especially designed to merge all kind of data acquired by all type of SAR sensor and perform fast parallelised processing of displacement time series.
In addition, MSBAS allows incremental processing, which only requires a minimum of computation when a new image is added to the time series.
Successful candidates will be trained to the usage and automatization of the MSBAS time series method for fast mass processing of ground deformation time series.
The event is open to students, postgraduates and young professionals from universities or public research centres who are involved with SAR monitoring. The group size is limited to 10 participants.
Conditions for participation:
- Have a basic knowledge of Linux and shell programming
- Be in possession of a Linux computer
- Be fluent in French or English
- Be registered in a University or a public research institution
- Register and be present for the whole duration of summer school
The group size is limited to 10 participants. Eligible candidatures will be accepted on a first come, first served basis. Priority will however be given to members from Belgian and Luxembourgian institutions.

In the frame of different project funded by the National Research Fund (FNR) of Luxembourg and the Belgian Science Policy (BELSPO), and in collaboration with the Centre Spatial de Liège (Belgium) and the Canada Centre for Mapping and Earth Observation, Natural Resources Canada, ECGS developed a fully automatized processing chain that is currently applied to monitor e.g. the ground deformation over the territory of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and neighbouring Greater Region as well as the Virunga Volcanic Province or landslides in South Kivu, Democratic Republic of Congo.
The present summer school is organised in the frame of the project SMMIP: Split band assisted Multi-dimensional and Multi-zonal InSAR time series Processor (INTER/MOBILITY/17/11462632) supported by the Luxembourg National Research Fund.
Participant will be trained using the CSL InSAR Suite Software (© Centre Spatial de Liège) to produce the geocoded deformation maps required to feed the MSBAS. Note that this step could however also be performed with other classical InSAR processing software. Participants will be provided with the open software (MSBAS and scripts). CSL-owned module will require specific license to be delivered by CSL.
