Programme: TELSAT 3
Start - End: 30 september 1993 - 27 februari 1995
Context and objectivesTo evaluate the usefulness of ERS-1 SAR for complementing in situ measurements campaigns and 3D hydrodynamic modelling of the Rhine-Meuse discharge.
More specific goals:
- to evaluate whether the Rhine-Meuse discharge front can be detected by ERS-1 SAR;
- to examine the SAR signature of the front;
- to examine the physical process responsible for this signature.
Expected scientific results
While in many circumstances, satellite-based sea surface temperature (SST) data may be preferable to SAR data, sine more information is then available regarding spatial variability within the plume, SAR has the advantage of high resolution and is not affected by cloud. Where SST is unavailable because of cloud cover or because high resolution is required (e.g., close to the river mouth), SAR imagery will be valuable in giving the location of fronts.
