This image acquired by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites on 28 May 2021, shows the area around the Nordenskiold glacier along the west coast of Greenland.
In the last week of May 2021, the temperature in the area reached almost summer-like values. Among the highest temperatures recorded on 28 May: 18.5°C in Stroemfjord and 15.6°C in Egedesminde Lufthavn, two settlements not far from the Nordenskiold Glacier. These temperatures triggered the first significant ice sheet thawing event of 2021 in Greenland, as visible in this Sentinel-2 image.
The Copernicus Sentinel satellites are particularly useful for monitoring surface changes in the ice sheets during melting episodes.
