EUMETSAT is an intergovernmental organisation formed in 1986 to service a current total of 19 Member States. Eumetsat operates a fleet of geostationary satellites calles 'MeteoSat'. Not only is EUMETSAT Europe’s meteorological satellite agency but the organisation works alongside European institutions, space agencies and other satellite operators world-wide to secure climate and environmental monitoring for our home planet. EUMETSAT is pro-actively shaping the policies and activities of Global Monitoring for the Environment and Security (GMES). This important initiative of the European Commission will be Europe’s contribution to a global programme to integrate satellite systems around the world, which will ensure that environmental and climate data are shared and redundancy avoided.
