Information

Airborne imaging spectroscopy is an established remote sensing technique with an expanding range of applications in the environmental and earth sciences. Based on the detection of narrow contiguous bands, it allows the identification of terrestrial materials by their reflectance spectrum

Over the past few years, ESA’s Airborne Imaging Spectrometer APEX (Airborne Prism Experiment) was developed under the Prodex program by a Swiss-Belgian consortium, with the aim of fostering the use of imaging spectroscopy for scientific applications and support simulation and cross-calibration/validation of new sensors.

APEX features up to 532 spectral bands acquired in 1000 pixels across track with a FOV of 28°, resulting in ground pixels sizes of 1.5-2.5m at typical flight levels of 3000-5000m above target.

APEX has been formally accepted by ESA at the end of 2010. Consequently, 2011 was the first year of operations, resulting in two flight windows of a total of 7 weeks in 2011.
