Call for applications to participate in the Open Geohub / EO council summer school

Deadline 18 January 2025

Website

Organisation: OpenGeoHub foundation, Dutch Earth Observation council & SURF

Scope

The course is meant for MSc, PhD students and postdocs in the field of geospatial, environmental and EO data and science, EO missions, computer science and computer vision. Other interested parties are welcome subject to availability.

The summer school generally receives twice the number of applicants as places. However, 40 places are reserved for participants from institutes in the Netherlands and Belgium. If there are more than 40 applicants, the EO council will make a selection taking into account candidates’ previous training, the potential for the course to benefit their current studies or research (with a preference for beginning PhD students), and the diversity and distribution over institutes.

Topics

The school will consist of theoretical lectures and practical exercises (roughly 50% split). The following topics are planned:

  • Remote sensing from satellites using radar and lidar
  • Physics of EO imaging systems
  • Wave propagation and radiative transfer
  • In-situ validation
  • Cryosphere, hydrology, atmosphere and solid earth applications
  • Machine learning for spatial data
  • High-performance computing
  • Small and medium enterprises in Earth observation

Fees

The registration fee will be around 675€ for researchers and academics (including PhDs at Dutch and Belgium institutes) and 375€ for full-time students and 975€ for commercial participants. This covers on-site participation in the school, course material, food, excursion and social event, but excludes accommodation and travel to and from the summer school. Discounted accommodation at the WICC will be offered to participants.

Application

Participants from institutes in the Netherlands and Belgium can apply through submitting this application form.

Please submit your application before January 18th 2025 24:00 CET. If you are selected, you will receive an officially invitation letter for the event in the beginning of February from the OpenGeoHub foundation. You will then be able to register until May 1st 2025.

More information on the school (including the application for participants from other regions) is available here. Note that to apply for the reserved spaces for people from Dutch and Belgium institutes you have to use the application form linked above, not the one what will be available on opengeohub.org. The summer school is always over-subscribed.
