ECMWF is looking for a new Team Leader for its Climate Reanalysis Team, the group behind globally used datasets such as ERA5 and the upcoming ERA6. The position combines scientific leadership with responsibility for the production and future development of some of the world’s most important climate datasets.
Climate reanalysis brings together observations from satellites, weather stations, aircraft, ships and other sources with numerical models to reconstruct the past state of the Earth system. These consistent, gap-free datasets are widely used for climate monitoring, research, operational services and, increasingly, as training data for artificial intelligence and machine-learning applications.
The successful candidate will lead a team of scientists and technical specialists working on the continued delivery of ERA5, the production of its successor ERA6 and research towards future generations of global reanalysis. The role also involves shaping developments in data assimilation, uncertainty assessment, quality control and the use of AI and machine learning.
Candidates should have a strong scientific background in climate reanalysis, Earth-system data assimilation, observational data or climate monitoring, together with demonstrated experience in scientific and people leadership.
The position can be based at ECMWF’s headquarters in Reading, United Kingdom, or at its Bonn site in Germany. Belgian nationals are eligible to apply as Belgium is one of ECMWF’s Member States.
