In late December 2023, a series of powerful storms in the Pacific Ocean caused massive waves, flooding and evacuation orders in coastal areas of Northern and Central California.
The Ventura County coastline was hit hard when a rogue wave injured eight people. This image, acquired by a Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellite on 1 January 2024, shows the turbidity of the seawater as a result of increased wave activity.
By analysing data collected by the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites, researchers can determine the concentration of suspended particles in the water, which is a key indicator of its turbidity.
