ESA and ESERO Belgium's Climate Detectives programme challenges students aged 9 to 18 to become real climate researchers. Working in groups, they study a climate problem and search for solutions. For topics related to agriculture, ESA ESERO has developed new supporting materials in collaboration with VITO Remote Sensing, using platforms such as Terrascope.
Agriculture plays a key role not only in our food supply but also in how our climate changes and is regulated. This makes it an ideal starting point for a Climate Detectives project. With a series of six inspiring videos, Dr. Stephanie Delalieux (PhD in Bioscience Engineering, VITO Remote Sensing) guides students step by step. They discover how agriculture and climate influence each other and learn how to conduct their own research using satellite imagery, drones, and tools such as Terrascope, MAPEO, and WatchItGrow.
Six inspiring videos for real climate detectives (available in Dutch)

ESERO Climate Detectives: Investigating a climate problem like a real detective
Study a climate problem in class and go out like real detectives in your own environment. Using satellite images and your own field research or data from other local sources, students can conduct a scientific investigation. Groups of students can use the expert videos to get their research off to a flying start. What is the climate problem? What research should we conduct? What resources can we use during our research? The videos support students in getting their research off to a concrete start.
In addition, the teams will receive feedback from a professional scientist during an online feedback session. This STEM project provides teachers with a powerful tool for raising awareness among young people about the impact of climate change.
