The American space agency NASA is planning to develop a satellite to measure the amount of snow on Earth. In preparation of this mission, an international team of scientists left on January 24 on a snow expedition to Colorado, United States. Five years long they will conduct research there to determine which types of sensors and which technologies are best suited to make snow thickness measurements from space.
One of the researchers who flew to the snowy heights of Colorado is a Belgian, and part of our community of STEREO researchers too! Hans Lievens of KU Leuven is in charge of the STEREO projects SNOPOST and C-SNOW, two projects that were previously featured in this webstory on a method for satellite-based snow depth measurements.
