We are pleased to announce the launch of the 2025 Call for Proposals under the STEREO IV programme (Support to Exploitation and Research in Earth Observation). This call invites researchers to submit proposals for thematic network projects, focusing on innovative Earth observation research that addresses major societal challenges.
Focus of the Call
The 2025 call aims to fund large-scale, multidisciplinary research projects over a duration of four years. Projects must align with one of the following thematic priorities:
- Understanding the impact of climate change on terrestrial and marine environments,
- Enhancing advanced monitoring of hazards, including pandemics,
- Supporting the monitoring of environmental health and biodiversity, or
- Promoting the use of
- geo-information for sustainable and green cities.
Successful proposals will demonstrate strong partnerships between 2 to 4 Belgian research teams and at least one international partner, ensuring genuine scientific synergy. This includes joint publications, shared resources, and co-supervised PhDs. Innovation, collaboration, and societal impact remain at the heart of this call.
A renewed emphasis is placed on international cooperation and interdisciplinary approaches. Partnerships are encouraged to explore cutting-edge methodologies, including the use of remote sensing data from sources like the Copernicus Sentinels and BELSPO’s collaborative ground segment Terrascope. Proposals must also outline clear plans for knowledge dissemination and societal impact, reaching beyond the scientific community.
Key Dates
The call follows a two-stage process:
- Expressions of Interest (mandatory) are due by 30 January 2025 at 4 p.m.
- Selected applicants will submit their full proposals by 7 April 2025 at 4 p.m.
The contracts are set to start in December 2025.
The total budget for this call is set at approximately €7.4 million, although this is subject to final approval.
Why Participate?
STEREO IV provides an opportunity to conduct impactful, high-quality Earth observation research while fostering collaboration between Belgian and international teams. Researchers will gain access to advanced data resources and play a vital role in tackling global challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss and sustainable urban development.
