Etosha National Park, located in northern Namibia, is one of southern Africa’s largest and most ecologically important protected areas.

A major wildfire recently affected the park, destroying approximately 30% of its grazing pasture and spreading beyond its boundaries into areas near the Angolan border. According to authorities, the fire has now been contained, but it has caused extensive damage to grazing land and threatened habitats for various wildlife, including endangered black rhinos and over 100 other mammal species.

This Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, acquired on 30 September 2025, shows the burn scar left by the fire.
