Meteosat is the European meteorological program in GEO (Geostationary Orbit) that was initiated in 1972 by ESRO (European Space Research Organization).

The overall objective of the Meteosat system was -and still is - the provision of cost-effective satellite data and related services on a continuous basis to support the requirements of the EUMETSAT Member States.
