Context and objectives

Hangzhou (1.3 million inhabitants) is presently the 6th tourist city of China. The West Lake scenic area and surroundings constitute a major tourist route receiving more than 500.000 foreign and 15 million internal visitors each year. The objectives of the city plan forecast an important increase in the number of tourists (up to 1.5 million foreign and 40 million internal visitors in the year 2010), which will make tourism the most important source of income of the city.

The development of the tourism sector needs to be accompanied by careful planning, taking into account several urban aspects such as economy, demography, environment, construction, etc. in addition to the tourist attractions and resources themselves. The design and implementation of an urban geographic information system (UGIS) can be seen as a modern and powerful means to reach these objectives. The city also plans to evaluate and develop other tourist attractions in the neighbouring counties. Satellite remote sensing allows a constant and synoptic approach of the tourist issues at this scale.

Project outcome

Expected scientific results

Design of UGIS (Urban Geographic Information System) and development of a prototype, consisting of :
- a basic geographic database for the 'Hangzhou West Lake' area (1:10.000) and the 'Two Rivers & One Lake' district (1:200.000);
- a tourism database : resources, service facilities, planning of optimal routes, statistics;
- a gardens and historic relics database : income, maintenance, planning;
- a database for city planning (1:25.000, 1:50.000) and land use (1:10.000).

The basic geographic database for the 'Hangzhou West Lake' area contains :
digitised topographic maps of 1985-87 in vector format (6 sheets of 1:10.000)
a digital terrain model (DTM) derived from the topographic maps
A spacemap shows the main tourist facilities and attractions of the 'Hangzhou West Lake' area (1:25.000).
