- Land degradation in the dry tropics

Context and objectives

- to evaluate the possibilities offered by remote sensing data to provide a systematic monitoring system of the land degradation in the dry tropics at different scales;
- to investigate the socio-economic aspects of the degradation;
- to evaluate the role of remote sensing and GIS in environmental accounting.

Project outcome

Expected scientific results

- An operational monitoring concept on land degradation should have a multiple scale. The main advantage is that efforts at a lower level (higher resolution) can be more efficiently directed if they are precede by an analysis at a higher level (lower resolution).
- Remote sensing data as such do not provide sufficient information to understand the land degradation in the dry tropics: additional data must be included in the analysis. GIS proved to be a suitable instrument to integrate both types of data, but there are still some shortcomings.
- Modelling of the socio-economic aspects of land degradation is inductive. Inductive modelling should precede predictive modelling. Current GIS software can only be used for the latter type of modelling and should therefore be improved.
- It was shown that the contribution of RS and GIS to environmental accounting is possible and positive at the level of a subregion of a country.
