SPIC - Oil Spills in Ports - Investigation on UV camera Capabilities

Context and objectives

The goal of the SPIC project was to publish a seminal paper on the capabilities of UV cameras to detect oil spills in a port environment starting from the STEREO funded SWIPE experiments, given the fact that no such study can be found in the literature. Comparisons with RGB data is included in the paper. The large amount of data available allows for the inference of valuable insights related to optimal camera settings, optimal viewing angles, optimal weather conditions, among others, for different oil types. Most of the scientific findings are derived in the framework of the SWIPE project, but deeper data analysis and writing a complex pioneering paper requires more time after the completion of SWIPE (June 2024).

Project outcome

The scientific analysis involved members from three institutions: two from Belgium (VITO and Port of Antwerp-Bruges) and one from France (DOTA, ONERA).

The paper has been evaluated by two anonymous reviewers. After two rounds of revisions, it has been accepted for publication on 18 March 2025 and published online as an open access article on 20 March 2025.
