During the workshop, our very own Jean-Christophe Schyns and Joost Vandenabeele gave an overview of the STEREO programme.
Next, Catherine Linard from UNamur's Department of Geography presented two STEREO projects focused on epidemiology and urban studies in sub-Saharan Africa:
- Modelling and forecasting African Urban Population Patterns for vulnerability and health assessments (MAUPP) , aimed to build a monitoring system on urban areas that could be refined; and
- Remote sensing for Epidemiology in African CiTies (REACT) where scientists used satellite imagery to improve knowledge of intra- and inter-urban malaria risk.
Malaria hotspots, identified based on data derived from surveys coupled with EO data on climate variables influencing vector-borne diseases (REACT project)
Sabine Vanhuysse from Université Libre de Bruxelles' Earth Observation and Geospatial Information Science then presented the SLUMAP project (Remote Sensing for Slum Mapping and Characterization in sub-Saharan African Cities), aimed at developing an open-source framework for the processing of remote sensing images to identify and characterise deprived urban areas.
