On 30 August, Hurricane Idalia reached category 3 before making landfall southeast of Tallahassee in a marshy and thinly populated part of Florida. It weakened and advanced through Georgia and South Carolina as a tropical storm, causing extensive flooding and “dangerous coastal inundation”.

Throughout Florida, neighbourhoods were flooded, particularly along the state’s western coast, and power outages affected 250,000 residents. Two people died in traffic accidents that police linked to the harsh weather conditions. Cities such as Cedar Key and Crystal River were especially hard-hit, with rising floodwaters affecting low-lying areas.

On 30 August, at 15:52 (UTC) Copernicus Sentinel-3 captured this image of the hurricane over Georgia moving towards South Carolina:

Data derived from images acquired by the Copernicus Sentinel-3 satellite mission enable global monitoring of hurricanes and cyclones and improve in the scientific understanding of the composition of the atmosphere and extreme weather events.
