In the more than 6 years that PROBA-V has been operational, it has captured numerous images of the Earth: land surfaces, urban areas, coastal regions, as well as natural events and phenomena.
The year 2020 will mark PROBA-V’s transition from providing operational land surface monitoring observations (through April 2020) into a scientific experimental phase of 2 – 3 years. The experiments that will be performed include among others observing a given location at multiple viewing directions and research on nighttime observations of urban areas.
In addition, a first PROBA-V cubesat companion will be launched in the second half of 2020. These cubesats will complement and expand the PROBA-V observations in the visible to thermal domain and will facilitate for example land surface temperature and water stress research.
After PROBA-V’s operational phase, the entire data series will be reprocessed into Collection 2, including major improvements to the cloud detection and atmospheric correction.
In the meantime, you can enjoy the new PROBA-V calendar 2020, available for you to download and use as desktop background images.
