Celebrating 40 Years of Earth Observation in Belgium!

On 13 May, the Belgian Earth Observation community gathered at the Royal Library of Belgium (KBR) to mark a major milestone: 40 years of continuous support for Earth Observation research through the federal programme STEREO (formerly TELSAT).

Following a welcome by BELSPO, the 130 participants enjoyed an inspiring keynote by Professor Begüm Demir (Technische Universität Berlin), who presented cutting-edge developments in the application of artificial intelligence to Earth observation.

Next, four researchers supported by the STEREO programme shared their personal experiences. They reflected on the evolution of remote sensing, the influence of TELSAT/STEREO on their careers, the value of a national programme in supporting Belgian research, and the key challenges facing the field in the years ahead.

To close the event, the programme managers looked back on four decades of achievements: hundreds of funded projects, partnerships with numerous institutions, and a vibrant community of researchers nurtured over the years. It was also a moment to express gratitude to all those who have made this journey possible—programme managers, administrative teams, and partners alike.

40 years of innovation, collaboration, and impact. A proud legacy, and a bright future ahead!
