Global ecosystems are vulnerable to our changing climate in ways that we still do not fully comprehend. Fortunately, the unprecedented volumes of Earth Observation data gathered today allow for thorough investigation of Earth's climate system and its interactions with the biosphere.

Several international research initiatives and scientific projects already focus on the application of mathematical and statistical methods to extract insights about the functioning of the hydrosphere, biosphere and atmosphere from this emerging Earth information data-cube.

On the 4th and 5th of October 2018, a group of twenty lead researchers from multiple institutions around the world gathered in Ghent with the occasion of the end of the STEREO III SAT-EX project. The aim of this workshop was to discuss the current state in data-oriented applications to unravel biosphere–climate interactions over large scales.

In addition, future challenges were identified. A perspective manuscript is currently being prepared, with the goal to discuss innovative mathematical and statistical techniques to extract valuable insights regarding the response of the biosphere to climate dynamics from our multi-dimensional Earth observation data-cube.
