IV.4 Image analysis and classification

Summary

IV - FROM DATA TO INFORMATION

4- HOW CAN WE ANALYSE IMAGES AND PRODUCE MAPS?

A map is a visual representation of an area such as a country, city or neighbourhood, showing the locations of selected objects or features by symbols.

So maps show information about our surroundings in an understandable way.  They are usually drawn on a flat surface and can be printed, but we can also view them on our screens. Maps are created for different purposes: they can help people navigate, let meteorologists predict the weather, support scientists to study changes on the earth's surface, etc.

Remote sensing data is an important source of information for making maps. This information can be derived from this data using techniques such as

  • determination of terrain elevation

  • deriving surface variables

  • visual analysis

  • automatic image classification

  • change detection
